At the end of October, former U.S. Open champion Michael Campbell and Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley are expected in Comporta for the first Portugal Legends Championship.
The tournament will run from 30 October to 1 November at Pinheirinho Golf Course, bringing the Staysure Legends Tour to the Alentejo coast and giving the course its biggest international sporting event to date.
For decades, international golf in Portugal has been closely associated with the Algarve. That is still where many of the country’s best-known resorts and courses are concentrated. But Comporta is beginning to build a golfing reputation of its own.
In 2025, the Dunas course at Terras da Comporta was named Europe’s Best Golf Course by the World Golf Awards. The nearby Torre course, also at Terras da Comporta, was named the World’s Best New Golf Course the same year.
Pinheirinho adds another course to that cluster. Designed by Portuguese architect Jorge Santana da Silva, its 18 holes run through dunes and pine forest within a 400-hectare estate. The wider Pinheirinho project is planned around two hotels, residences and the golf course, with an estimated investment of €1.7 billion.
The timing of the tournament is also worth noting. Late October is far removed from the summer weeks most closely associated with Comporta. Golf gives the region a reason to attract international visitors when beach tourism has slowed, which is one reason Turismo de Portugal continues to treat the sport as an important tool for reducing seasonality.
Comporta will not replace the Algarve as Portugal’s golf centre any time soon. But three internationally recognised courses and a professional tournament make it increasingly difficult to think of the region only in terms of beaches, restaurants and summer houses.
