The Algarve Is No Longer Cheap. Retirees Still Rank It Near the Top

The Algarve has been ranked the second-best place in the world to retire in 2026, behind Boquete in Panama and ahead of destinations in Mexico, France, Greece and Spain.

What is more interesting is the cost attached to that position.

The ranking estimates that a couple would need around $3,085 per month to live in the Algarve.

Boquete, which took first place, is estimated at $2,400. Crete comes in at $1,830 and Tarragona at just over $2,000.

The Algarve is therefore no longer competing mainly because it is cheap.

Property prices and rents have risen substantially in many coastal areas, and the gap between the Algarve and Portugal’s largest cities has narrowed.

For retirees looking at Lagos, Vilamoura or other established coastal locations, the idea of southern Portugal as a low-cost alternative to the rest of Western Europe is becoming harder to sustain.

Yet the region continues to rank near the top.

The reasons are increasingly about what is already in place: a large international community, widely spoken English, healthcare, infrastructure, more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year and relatively easy access to the rest of Europe.

That combination also makes the Algarve easier to move to than many cheaper alternatives.

Someone arriving from North America or Northern Europe is not starting from scratch in a region unfamiliar with foreign residents.

Cost still matters, particularly when housing is included. But the Algarve’s position in this year’s ranking suggests that its appeal is becoming less dependent on being inexpensive.

It may now be competing on something more difficult to reproduce: familiarity, infrastructure and a lifestyle that already works for a large international population.
