Ireland Is Quietly Becoming a Major Market for Portugal

Ireland was only Portugal’s 10th-largest international market by number of guests in 2025. By tourism revenue, it ranked sixth.

Around 564,000 Irish guests stayed in Portugal during the year, generating approximately 2.28 million overnight stays.

Tourism receipts from Ireland reached €1.23 billion, up 2.8% from 2024. The difference between those rankings is notable.

Ireland does not send as many visitors to Portugal as several larger European markets, but the economic contribution of those visitors is considerably higher than the guest numbers alone would suggest.

The Algarve remains at the centre of that relationship.

It accounted for 73.6% of Irish overnight stays in Portugal, followed by Lisbon at 12.1% and the North at 5.9%.

Air traffic also continued to increase, with around 900,000 passengers arriving from Ireland during 2025, 8.5% more than the previous year.

More than three-quarters of flights originated in Dublin. The scale is particularly striking for a country with a population of around 5.5 million.

Ireland represented 4.2% of Portugal’s tourism receipts in 2025, despite accounting for only 2.9% of international guests.

That relationship is now extending into conversations about spending longer periods in Portugal.

On 22 September, the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce will hold its Moving to Portugal Show in Dublin, covering property, tax, residency, business and relocation.

The tourism numbers do not tell us how many Irish visitors will eventually buy property or move to Portugal.

They do show that Ireland already matters to Portugal far more than its size would suggest.
